Discover our history

In the early 2000s, in New York, after going through a troubled period due to the attacks on the country, Simone was ending a season in the USA. Born in São Paulo, she didn’t want to go back to live in the city and decided to try Fortaleza at the invitation of a friend. She ended up working at a company in her field, Architecture. Ceará has a magic in the air that drives us to pursue new dreams and changes. During a visit to Jeri, she met someone who was selling land to a small group of Argentines who wanted to build an inn. They needed someone for the project and the good winds from Jeri made this meeting come true.

At the same time, Alberto, in the midst of the crisis in Argentina and the demonstrations of “Piquetes e Panelas” that transformed the entire country, in addition to going through a divorce, began to consider new paths for his life. He learned that Jericoacoara had great development potential and decided to fulfill his dream of owning an inn to retire and live by the sea. However, at that time, he was still unaware of the intensity of life in the hotel business.

Guillermo, one of Alberto’s twins, was finishing high school when he embarked on the idea of his father’s future. He enrolled in hospitality college to understand how this market works. He started his career in Buenos Aires, working in a downtown hotel, on Suipacha. This hotel was home to the renowned Facundo Cabral, a musician, singer, writer and composer. The inspiration of being in the same place as this Argentine icon brought with it the essence of the country’s history for Guillermo.

From a distance, the inn project was being built through contact between Simone and her partner, as well as the group of Argentines. As the work approached, Simone was invited to supervise the construction, an intense experience, even more so at that time when Jeri was less accessible. After six intense months, the inn was finally ready. The group of Argentines was reduced, and only Alberto remained, although he visited the work only a few times, since he still had commitments in Argentina to fulfill. At that point, Simone and Alberto became a couple, a relationship that blossomed alongside the building Naquela.

The early days of management were challenging as they represented a new type of work for both of them. The inn opened with 18 rooms, without television and air conditioning, still oblivious to the online reality of travel planning. The first steps were difficult, but they didn’t give up. On December 20, 2004, the first official guests arrived, and New Year’s Eve 2004/2005 marked Guillermo’s first visit. The business was growing and developing slowly.

Guillermo visited the inn several times, but continued his life without moving to Jeri. In 2008, he embarked on a three-month backpacking trip across America. In July 2008, unfortunately, we lost Alberto, bringing up conflicting feelings. Inn Naquela was not built only with bricks and cement, but through human relationships. It was a sad and reflective moment.

Guillermo was the son who decided to follow his father’s dreams by permanently moving to Jeri. With Simone’s help, they continued to run the project and strengthened the beautiful friendship they always shared. That’s story is a story of encounters. In 2009, Jeri experienced the highest amount of rainfall in the last – until that moment – 60 years. This significantly changed the tourist scene, as the lakes became even more attractive. In that same period, online sales platforms began to develop further, although sales were still modest due to the inn’s simple structure. However, improvements began to emerge. Between 2011 and 2013, the movement in Jeri and Naquela began to grow, with the windy season attracting many athletes. Although the profits were not significant, Guillermo and Simone undertook an expansion that allowed the inn to have 30 rooms, allowing a greater flow of reservations and partnerships with agencies and operators.

As of 2014, the old rooms underwent updates, and the inn received several improvements, thus building its brand that is synonymous with respect. The beauty of the physical spaces reflects the affection and bonds built throughout the inn’s history. Currently, Simone lives her life in São Paulo, while Guillermo personally manages the inn in Jeri. You can find him at breakfast, enjoying his cheese bread, or in the gardens, always active in the inn’s activities. Choosing to stay with us would honor us, as your story would also become part of ours. Come to Jeri! Come to Naquela.
